And this time not as good. Gibson Historic 1957 Les Paul VOS in a rare pelham blue (back and sides, not just the top). Disasspointed. Neck is too beefy. Guess I am used to the slim 60's necks. Also set up from the dealer sucked and the craftsman ship and attention to detail just wasnt there. Oh well, back it goes. Will stick with my ESPs and Tom Anderson, though wouldn;t mind trying a PRS. Have always been curious about those.
Kirk's monsters on display
At the SFO airport until 12/6. Chances are good I will roll thru there at some point since I am on like 100 flights per year, mostly in the west. At that time you can be sure I will take many more pics. Until then, enjoy....
You can tell he doesn't play Mummy 2 very much as the hardware isn't all rusted out!
The Hammett has landed
Kirk Hammett's Tom Anderson (well, one of them)
Posted this over in GD but thought there might be some interest here: http://www.espguitars.com/forums/1963230/posts/2077384-the-hammett-has-landed
Anyone use a Roland VG-88?
I just purchased a used one that appeared in very good shape and it arrived still appearing so. I am having a problem with the unit. I get no sound...well almost no sound. I am using the unit with headphones and a regular guitar with 1/4" cable. i am NOT using the GK pickup and 13 pin cable yet, though plan to in the future.
The problem is I am getting no guitar sound even after fiddling with the volume, guitar volume, I even reset the whole unit. I AM getting sound when I switch to tuner mode. Out of the 100 or so presets, I found 2 acoustic guitar simulators where I get a clear sound. All the other patches are either silent or a slight hiss/hum which I am guessing is due to the particular amp/pickup modeling.
Anyone familiar with this unit and have suggestions? I have an email in to Roland but not sure how long it will take them to respond. I hate to return the unit if it is a simple fix. It's been a long time since I used one of these, having previously owned the original VG8 back in the late 90's.
NGD: Jackson Relic Rhoads
This just arrived today. Jackson Relic Rhoads. Basically (from my research) it is a reliced version of a 1982 RR1T owned by Mike Shannon. Not 100% sure of the year but I believe it was a one off Jackson did for the 2004 NAMM show. I plan on calling them to get more details. The good part is, don't have to worry about bashing the tips, they are pre-bashed. Those are aged Seymour Duncans in there but not sure of the model. Plan is to replace with EMG H (neck) and EMG 81 (bridge).

More, detailed pics to follow including serial numbers (for Rappa). There are some surprises to be revealed. Stay tuned!!
KH-20 clone on eBay
So this one is a bit puzzling. Looks like a KH-20 and even haz locking Sperzels but alas it is not. The seller is advertising it as a custom KH-2 but it does not have a signature. It does have skull inlays though. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2007-ESP-KH-2-Custom-Kirk-Hammett-Signature-Black-Preowned-/252085481124?hash=item3ab1772ea4
it's even from 2007 so around the time of the KH-20. Maybe somone couldn't get ahold of a 20 and custom ordered this one?
Kirk's Jazz III pick
Anyone actually tried playing with one of these? Thoughts? Reason I ask is because I am unsettled on my pick of choice. For years and years I always used a Tortex standard 1.0 (the blue one) and seemed fine with that. A few months ago I tried to give the Tortex Jazz XL a whirl and kind of liked it. The smaller rounded top allowed me to get my index finger kind of curled around the top for better hand feel. I wasn't too sold on the actual durability of the pick itself so tried the Ultex and really liked the sound. Unfortunately, what I found out there was the Ultex kind of grabbed on the strings a little so made fast scale runs and other lead word a tad bit restrained as it didn't have a good release. I then tried the regular nylon Jazz picks and really like them. The notes seem a lot brighter and it really opened up my playing, but I am conflicted on the size. The small regular Jazz XL seems to be tits for fast single note lead runs but I miss the meat of a bigger pick when doing a lot of fast and heavy rythm work (think Shortest Straw, Puppets, Disposable Heroes, 4 Horsemen, etc). The problem I noticed with the Jazz XL for lead work is the top of the pick that sits above your thumb/index grip tends to flop back and forth. You don't have that with the smaller Jazz shape which is why I think the smaller one is the choice for lead work.
Anyway that leads me to my post. I decided to get a Hammett pick tin to try the spade (nee hart) shaped Jazz III he is using. I fooled around with it a little bit but have not yet had a chance to get a full practice session in with it. Profile wise, it is more similar to the regular smaller Jazz III. I don't know yet if the notch cut out is helpful or not. I don't particularly see how it would enhance my grip though I do feel like it doesn't get "lost" in my hand as easily when switching between rhythm and lead work. Not sure if the gauge is the same as the red one but the flexibility seems really nice to me for leads, not too thick or to thin. The 2 top points kind of dig into my finger a bit which seems like it could get annoying. Anyone else do any extensive playing with this pick and what are your thoughts, especially in comparison to the red Jazz and Jazz XL?
NOTE: I also have the black Stiffo Jazz and Jazz XLs. I prefer the sound of those for a more traditional Classic Rock sound and for acoustic playing. My dilemma here is strictly shape related, not sound related. I seem settled on the nylon Jazz, just trying to figure out which size. Especially considering if going with the Hammett pick, you just can't buy them by the bag, you have to buy a whole tin which in essence makes them $5-$6 per pick.
Anyone looking for a JH-3?

Question for KH-2 SE Green Burst owners
Do you find that your notes sometimes die on you? I have noticed recently that though the sustain seems good on the guitar, notes just suddenly fizzle out. I compared it against my Ouija, KH20, and Vintage and those seem to carry the notes longer. At first I thought it might be because I was pressing down to hard high up on the scalloped frets and choking out the notes so I dropped down to the 12th fret and it happens there too. I am pretty sure it is not a battery because I changed mine recently but am wondering if it is inherent in the guitar or a setup issue. Like I said, the single notes ring loud and clear, then just suddenly die off similar to a noise gate.
KH-2 SE problematic note decay
I posted this over on the sig forum so that another greenburst owner could check their guitar for comparison, but I am having a problem with mine. The problem is with an unusual note decay. I noticed that notes on the treble side of the guitar didn't seem to sustain as long as on my other ESPs. So I timed them and they seem to sustain for about 7 seconds. I then compared with my KH-20 (same tuning and string guage) and my KH-DC (one step higher gauge, and one step lower tuning). Both the other guitars timed out at 10 seconds. I checked the batteries and strings and that was not the issue.
Yesterday I took the guitar to my tech and he confirmed there is an unusual note decay. The notes susteain and ring strong and true but towards the end, they just decay super fast and die prematurely. It only seems to happen ont eh 3 treble strings. We checked the neck adjustment and that did nothing. We also checked the pickup height to no avail. We don't think it is the pots because it is happening on both the neck and the bridge pickups. His only thought at this point is maybe the distance between the pickups is slightly off which is causing some sort of harmonic interference.
Dave R or anyone else out there. have you ever experienced something like this before and how did you remedy it?

Sweetwater deal is back
Sweetwater has brought back their 36 month interest free deal on purchases over $700. Figured I would pass it along in case anyone is eyeing a big purchase or custom order.
